Now that summer is approaching we are more likely to be spending time in the sun. It is important to adjust our skin care routine accordingly focusing on good skin nutrition and adequate protection from UVA and UVB rays as well as environmental factors.
While this can lead to a more simplified routine it does not mean we should skip important steps like exfoliation, which is vital to the health and appearance of our skin.
Because of increased exposure to sunlight and heat during the summer months now is the perfect time to cycle our skin off with more aggressive chemical exfoliants such as glycolic, lactic and salycilic acids enzymes that loosen the bonds holding keratinized and dead skin cells to the epidermis.
Benefits of Enzymatic Exfoliation
As we age our natural ability to shed these dead skin cells slows down. Enzymes applied to the skin digest the unwanted build up and leave a glowing and healthy surface prime for more effective product absorption. The use of enzymes is a more gentle approach to exfoliation because enzymes are activated by heat and water not by adjusting PH levels as in the use of chemical exfoliants.
All of the enzymes we use in the treatment rooms at Spa Atlantis are derived naturally from fruit and vegetable sources. Besides removing keratin protein from the uppermost layer of our skin or the stratum corneum, enzymes from fruit and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and vitamins making the exfoliation process a nourishing and replenishing step as well one used for resurfacing.
While all of the facials we offer at the spa can be customized to incorporate enzymes.
The Acne Facial and The Facial Extraordinaire focus on the use of enzymes to resurface and rejuvenate the skin. They are also a fantastic aid in softening the skin for extractions making it a more comfortable experience for our guests.
We stock our backbar with gentle formulas like Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant and Rhonda Allison’s Derma Peel which both use bromelain and papain to breakdown unwanted cells and both have a slightly granular texture allowing them to be gently buffed off of the skin. We also make use of the more active Mint Papaya enzyme from Rhonda Allison as well as the Pumpkin Parfait enzyme, which uses the vegetable derived enzyme protease and is excellent for use on coarse, acneic skin types. Again, I find these ingredients preferable to acids in the summer because they provide so much nutrition for the skin.
Probably my favorite enzyme to use in the treatment room as well as my favorite to send clients home with is the Cherry Jubilee Enzyme from Rhonda Allison. This product is a powerful phyto-nutrient peel full of antioxidant rich polyphenols. It is an excellent treatment for dull photo-aged skin but can be used on all skin types. It also smells amazing. I think the secret to a great skin care regimen is to focus on simple, effective treatments and products that work together to provide visible results.
Enzymatic exfoliation removes the unwanted build up of cells on our skin without disrupting the skin’s barrier functions or stripping away moisture. It is the perfect way to keep your skin nourished and prepped for serums and moisturizers.
